A Family Day Out…

So, last week Ciaran and I decided we were going to visit a new place every week, a new town or city to explore each week. This obviously sounds like a fantastic idea, until you factor in that actually guys, you’ve got a baby now. So, here’s a few things we’ve learnt since having little Mr O about leaving the house and a bit about our day out in Winchester.

The day began just like any other, up and ready, sort bottles, pack changing bag etc. Then the attempt to actually leave the front door, I came back in the house 3 times whil… just had to pause writing as BABA woke suddenly from his nap apparently being stabbed or something equally horrific, oh wait a minute, nope, he just decided he was a bit peckish, an hour and a half before he’s due for a feed AND he’s just been put up an ounce! Then of course it was butt butt before bot bot and we had a little singing session (me singing the orange is the new black theme tune to him- nasally may I add as I have a cold) so all in all that took a little longer than expected and I kinda lost my train of thought- OH train! I must put that £2 coin in his train moneybox!!

Yes, back to it, I came back in the house 3 times just in the time it took Ciaran to put Oscar in the car! Forgetting multiple things. Now, I don’t want to brag because, and I have said this since day 1, I’m pretty sure we won’t be this lucky forever, we have a really well behaved baba when we’re out. He sleeps most of the time then wakes, looks up at us with his big blue eyes, lets out a whimper to alert us of his hunger, has a bottle and goes back to sleep. So, unfortunately I cannot advise you of how to survive a day out if your child is not a contented little angel. (there I go again bragging, please don’t hold it against me when I’m complaining about my snotty 2 year old) I can however, tell you some of the things we do to survive a day out with baby…

The Changing Bag- We have a Cath Kidston changing bag that comes with a fold away changing mat and bottle warmer. It’s not the BIGGEST of changing bags but it manages to fit our essentials in, including:

  • Nappies + Wipes
  • Nappy Bags
  • Spare Clothes for BABA
  • Spare Clothes for MAMA- I am NOT ready to rock the puke on shoulder trend yet.
  • Hand Sanitiser
  • Bottles
  • Milk Dispenser
  • Lip Balm
  • Sun Cream
  • Bibs + Musy’s

I just need to tell you about this milk dispenser- I’m sure a lot of you have them, I received mine as a gift and I honestly had no idea what it was, as I was planning to breast feed I just left it in a box at home waiting for the day I needed it, but, as the situation is I can’t breastfeed, so formula needs to be stored for us when we go out- ENTER Brother Max Milk Dispenser! This thing is an absolute life saver, you can hold 3 lots of powder in it which means I can make 3 bottles when I’m out and you literally just turn and pour! Which is also great when you need a bottle quick quick chop chop.

One Handed Meals-

We went to Prezzo for lunch in Winchester and I ordered a main course that I could easily eat with one hand, just in case BABA woke up and demanded MAMA’s cuddles, but I managed to get through it, PAPA wasn’t quite so lucky though and ended up eating his dessert one handed!

iPhone- If not only for snapping a million pictures and videos purely for the Sleepy Sounds app!

To be honest, that’s about it, as always I’ll have my trusty notebook in my bag with my lists and things I need to remember, from appointments and meetings to shopping lists!

What are your must haves for a day out?

White Noise

I have just discovered an absolute game changer!

Oscar has been pretty poorly since he was born, nothing serious but he’s suffered badly with the things he’s had. Which means that for the past 27 days we’ve had to ‘endure’ quite a bit of the new born baby scream, now, I can definitely handle the scream on a noise level but I hate watching him get so worked up that he’s sweating and turning a beautiful shade of purple, imagine, Violet Beauregard from Willy Wonka. Enter ‘Sleepy Sounds’ a free App on iPhones that has options for: Lullabies, White Noise, Nature Sounds or Your own music. You can set a timer on it to play for how ever long you’d like or it can just keep going and going. This app is literally like a switch for Oscar, he LOVES white noise and since I’ve been using this app I’ve done some research and it seems quite a few baba’s do! The tumble dryer or heavy rain are a favourite in this house. The minute I started playing the loud knocking noises of a tumble dryer he was silent, the app even has a nice soft colour changing backlight when playing. I am currently sat writing this blog whilst listening to a tumble dryer coming from my phone and the distant drones of my own tumble dryer fluffing up his baby towels and my baba is staring up at me, very peaceful and very content.

Another great thing about this app is that because it’s on your phone it’s portable so if you’re out in public and baba starts to get worked up you can open up your app, lock your phone and pop it in the car seat or pushchair to (hopefully) calm them down.

Let me know if you try this out and what you and baba think! Have you got any other must have apps I can try out?

Okay, when I was pregnant baby clothes shopping was of course my weakness as it is for every pregnant woman I know, however, the obsession became a problem when I got attached to a particular section of H&M Baby. They do little outfits, some 3 piece, some 2 (Dinosaur and Tiger are 3 piece Mickey and ?Waiter? are 2) they have an amazing price tag, they look so cute, and Oscar loves them, probably because they’re so cool- temperature wise, but I’d say that works in both senses of the word.

I love dressing him up in them because I don’t even have to think about it, so when it’s 7am and I’m trying to figure out what him and I are going to wear I don’t have to spend all my time making him look good and end up leaving the house wearing MY top back to front. Luckily, that hasn’t happened yet but I have realised I need a whole new wardrobe. I fit back into my jeans straight away- yet to fit in them pesky Ted Baker jeans, one day ONE DAY I’ll get ’em! BUT, I am still wearing my H&M Maternity jeans which may I say were a lifesaver, they are the most comfortable jeans I’ve ever owned and people always said to me ‘wow still in your jeans at 8 months pregnant’ after which I was only too pleased to pull up my top and show them the amazing waist band which covered my ever expanding bump!

Bump1I know you can’t see the jeans in that picture but I was wearing them then, with the bump that big, here’s a link to the jeans, a must have for any pregnant mummy’s if the waistband and the price tag don’t sway you just know I could even do some squats in these jeans- yes that’s right, THEY STRETCH!

So, it’s safe to say I am obsessed with H&M for Maternity and Baby, I always LIKED their clothes but now it’s just taken on a life of its own.

Can’t wait to get in there again in the week and have a mooch around, has anyone else had any shop obsession for baby clothes? I need to broaden my horizons!
