The Thing About The Baby Is…

The thing about the baby is:

  1. The poo will come out the side of the nappy and spread all over the inside of the trouser legs and vest and you will have just arrived at your destination and you will have forgotten spare trousers that day.
  2. If you are planning to put Calpol in the baba’s mouth using the provided syringe baba will use their tongue to push that liquid straight back out and that stuff is STICKY!
  3. You need to learn how to shave a face from a young age regardless of your child’s gender, using a spoon.
  4. Liquidised baby food stains.
  5. Baba will put everything in their mouth
  6. Your shoulder will be wet most of the time
  7. Some days the baba will simply not settle unless cuddled so tight to your body, don’t you dare move, don’t use the bathroom or eat, else the baby will wake up and cry until they go tomato and can’t breathe
  8. Their head’s are always finding the door, don’t worry though it’s HILARIOUS to headbutt everything
  9. The funniest things for you to do is be hurt… Scratched by baba causing blood? Amazing. Have you cried out in pain because those chubby little hands have pulled your hair? Funniest thing they’ve seen all day. Poked in the eye? AND WORST OF ALL- HEADBUTT TO THE LIP! *I can still taste the blood* so can Nana.
  10. They like to eat wipes, and suck sponges.

I honestly thought the child I gave birth to was a perfect little angel, turns out at nearly 6 months he’s actually a bit strange, I’m learning something new about this weird creature everyday. I’ll keep you posted on the things about the baby

Scrummy Shortbread Biscuits

I love baking things and cooking and all that jazz but the harsh truth is I’m just not very good, never the less I took a good stab at it and I’m pretty impressed with the results because they may not look like much but they tasted like heaven! VERY simple to make and I expect you have all the ingredients in your cupboard.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • 1 cup of butter
  • 4 cups of plain flour
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of white sugar

I preheat my oven and just whack up up the whole way because it’s maximum is below 300.

Mix the softened butter and sugar together until smooth

Screen Shot 2015-12-23 at 23.28.09

Add the egg and honey

Now in a separate bowl add the flour and baking powder together then slowly start to add the flour mix to the softened butter mix, by slowly I mean SALLOWLY, it gets really thick and stodgy but don’t add any water or anything because you need to be able to roll it out in a minute.

Get a working board out and cover it in flour to work with, put your dough on the board and start your work, roll it out and cut some shapes.

I realised at this point that I had used all my greaseproof paper so I improvised with foil and painted some butter over it to stop the sticking-

Bake at between 300 and 350 for 5-7 minutes depending on the thickness of your biscuits but don’t forget they need to be a bit soft.

Once you’ve taken your shortbread out of the oven leave them for a while on their cooking tray to adjust to the rooms temperature then move them onto a cooling rack.

Once they’ve cooled you can decorate if you like, I decorated my first batch then made some more that evening and used a fork to pierce holes in the top then sprinkled sugar over the top and they were just as delicious.

Little ‘tip’ I’m allergic to ginger so I don’t like making gingerbread man shapes so I turn my gingerbread man upside down and make a reindeer instead.

I’ve Been In Remission 1 Year

The 18th of December marked a year since I was told I was in Partial Remission from Ovarian Cancer. It had me feeling all kinds of things and really made me think about the after shock that an illness like that has on you and those around you.

For example I shall start with my nan, she was my rock throughout my illness she sat with me in hospitals for hours on end, cuddled me when I was crying in pain or crying from being absolutely exhausted from chemo, she would hold my hand and rub my back and play with my hair until I fell asleep. She held my hair back whilst I was sick and delivered food to my bed when I was too weak to move. She saw me at my worst and told me everything would be okay when people doubted me. The thing is, who was there for her? Some people, luckily the minority, were really very nasty when I chose to write my blog about my illness. The fact I’d kept it a secret seemed ‘unbelievable’ to some and they seemed to think it was okay to talk about me to other people and spread rumours without either asking me directly or having any facts.

This absolutely killed my nan, and me, as if me being poorly wasn’t hard enough on her she had to deal with people’s lies and how defeated and let down I felt. Like I said, I’m very lucky that those people were in the minority and are obviously not people I would want around me anyway but they got that rise from me, which I hated. How was I to PROVE it to them?

My Nan said once when my sister rang me in tears because she had heard some lies about me- ‘would they like to come and live with us for a couple of days? Do you think they would believe you then?’ It kills me that people genuinely think it’s okay to be like that to another person. I sincerely hope that you or someone close to you doesn’t go through what I went through because it’s hard enough to battle that illness and think you’re not going to make it to your next birthday without being… there is simply no other word for it… BULLIED too.

Then we will move on to me, I naively thought this is great, I’m in remission now all the pain will go. I’ll be well, I can work and run and get fit and do whatever I want.
No.

My body has been absolutely battered by treatments and operations and to be fair it’s been through an ordeal. So now, I’m a shadow of my former self, I still get a lot of pain. I still have cysts, that burst quite regularly and it is excruciating. Of course I have no way of knowing when they will decide to do that either, I was in the middle of serving a customer the other day and suddenly ended up doubled over in pain! It’s horrendous if I’m honest.

Some days I can’t even get out of bed because I’ve spent the majority of the night awake in pain and it really does wipe you out. I’ve mastered the ‘poker face’ where no one can really tell I’m in pain over my resting bitch face but sometimes I don’t want to pretend to be okay. I want to wallow in self pity and feel what needs to be felt because ‘that’s the thing about pain, it demands to be felt’

I suppose I should mention that I do feel exceptionally grateful and blessed. I never thought I would hear the words remission and I certainly never thought I’d give birth. The fear of it returning will live with me forever. The health hypochondria that every headache is a brain tumour because that’s ‘just my luck’ will always live with me. I will also NEVER stop telling women to GET. CHECKED. Its so so important and most women don’t go for fear of the pain please believe me when I say a couple of hours TOPS of being uncomfortable is much better than the alternative. Trust me.

Daily Face

I had a few requests to do a daily make-up look and video it but after attempting vlogging our weekend away in Ireland and failing I think I’ll give the videos a miss for now. So, I’ve decided to do a blog post explaining my daily make-up instead.

Products Used:

  • Urban Decay NAKED 2 Palette
  • MAC Prep + Prime Translucent Loose Powder
  • Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara
  • Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Pencil
  • MAC Prep + Prime Fix +
  • No 7 Instant Radiance Bronzing Highlighter
  • Illamasqua Eye Brow Cake
  • Emile Make Up Diamond Heart Base Primer
  • Maybelline Dream Satin Liquid Foundation
  • Benefit Watts Up Highlighter
  • Lasting Perfection Concealer

First things first it’s really important to me to lay all my make-up out in front of me that I’m going to be using, I like to put all my brushes together and all my bases together all eye products together etc and that way applying my make-up is a lot more enjoyable.

I start my moisturising my face, after I’ve washed and cleansed etc. I’m using The Clinique ‘Take the day off’ Cleansing balm at the moment which I’m LOVING, it’s £22. (Click image for product link)

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 17.01.20

I’m still enjoying my L’Oreal Paris Extraordinary Cleansing Oil, especially using waterproof mascara that stuff is STUBBORN and this oil just ensures I don’t have to scrub at my eyelashes, I use it on my lips too, it’s usually about £7.99 in boots but it’s on offer at the moment. (Click image for product link)

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 17.07.49

I’m still on the hunt for a really rich moisturiser, I’m thinking of taking my mans advice and going for an Olay cream, I’ve been doing a bit of research and I’m going to be testing some from next week.

After my face is moisturised I apply my primer all over my face, I use my fingers for this. It’s so silky I don’t need a lot to cover my whole face, I just reviewed this primer in my last Glossybox post, I can’t see myself settling on this primer but it’s the one I’m using right now. So if you have any recommendations please let me know. The primer is around £20 (Click image for product link)

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 21.05.39

Next, I go in with my foundation, this foundation is so lovely, I really do prefer this foundation to my MAC one it just seems to apply so much smoother and it’s got great coverage, if you’re looking for a foundation that’s great value for money I would really recommend this one, especially if you want a lovely satin finish. I have been spritzing my Real Techniques Beauty Blender and using that to apply my foundation lately and I have been applying it by using a dabbing motion it creates a much nicer finish and the coverage is a lot stronger. Foundation: £7.99 (Currently included in the 3 for 2 offer) Beauty Blender: £5.99 MAC Fix+: £17.00

I then go in with my concealer, the new medication I’m on has hugely broken me out which I have NEVER had before, I never got spots when I was growing up, I mean I got the odd one or two but never like it is right now my face is so sore I can feel them all under my skin, it’s horrible I don’t correctly know how to care for break outs so I’m going to be doing some research when this blog is finished. I just finished up my No7 concealer that I recently reviewed, I really liked that for my under eyes but I haven’t had a chance to go and repurchase it so I’m back to my old faithful- Collections Lasting Perfection Concealer, the coverage and staying powder of this stuff is INCREDIBLE! I apply this under each eye to cover those pesky dark circles, around the edge of my nose for the redness and on my chin, I use my Beauty Blender again with the patting motion again aswell. Also, this product only costs £3.99 (Click image for product link)

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 23.08.49

Eyebrows are next, I use the Illamasqua Eyebrow Cake for this, I don’t over draw my eyebrows or anything like that I just use this to fill them in really, I have really black eyebrows and blonde hair so it’s a bit awkward if I have ‘statement’ brows because people just think they’re completely fake- NOT a good look. I apply my eyebrow powder using a Daniel Sandler Angled Brush it works perrrrrfectly I just do small strokes throughout my brow. Illamasqua Brow Cake is £17.50 and the brush is £10.25 (Click image for product link)

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 23.15.14 Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 23.11.28

I apply my Watts Up Benefit Highlighter to each cheekbone and buff it in using the Real Techniques Stippling Brush, I just use stippling motions to make sure that there are no harsh lines around the highlight. The highlighter is £24.50 at the moment in Boots and the brush is £11.99 also in Boots.(Click image for product link)

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 23.20.00 Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 23.20.39

Onto the eyelids I normally keep it pretty simple day to day and use a gold based colour, I use ‘Bootycall’ all over the lid taking it up to my brow using the brush provided and then use ‘YDK’ or ‘Chopper’ through my crease using the MAC 217 Blending Brush and then cover the lid in ‘Half Baked’ using my ‘RT Shading Brush’ I got mine in a set a while ago and it’s flipping fantastic.

NAKED 2 Palette is £38 MAC Brush is £20 and Discounted RT Brush Set is £13.45 (Click images for product links)

Then I line my lips with my Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in the shade ‘Crazy in Love’ and I continue to fill my lips in with this colour then use my Lanolips to dab over it to gloss it up a bit. This Lip Pencil is £16 (Click Image for product link)

Glossybox November Review

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 21.09.40

November Glossybox was the most perfect thing, it was honestly like they had opened up my wishlist and checked off everything I was in need of and sent it to me! AMAZING.

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 21.04.53 Oh Revlon what have you done to me with this lipstick? I have the shade on the far right which is literally so similar to my lip colour I’m sad to say I’m a little disappointed. It is really not a colour I would purchase myself. However, the actual product Super Lustrous Lipstick is lovely. The consistency is perfect, as you know if you read my blog regularly I sugar really badly with sore lips, I finally found a lovely product in Lanolips which came in last months Glossybox and this lipstick really isn’t too drying which is perfect for this time of year. It’s wear time with eating and drinking isn’t too great but for just walk around wear you get a good few hours out of it.

OVERALL RATING: 4/10

I have been using the baby skin primer for over nearly 2 years now and I have enjoyed it because it’s really thick and I’m really self conscious about my pores, this has only become a problem for me in the last few years though. However, because I felt okay about the baby skin primer I didn’t feel like I needed to look any further. Then I received this Emite Make Up Diamond Heart Primer primer and I realised I don’t need a really thick primer for it to work. I do like this primer but I can’t do a great review as the company is Swedish and I really can’t find anywhere to buy it, their website is in Swedish and when I translate it to English it’s still really difficult. Maybe I’m just being silly but it’s made me not want to make the effort to repurchase, which, to me, means I didn’t like it that much.

I have never heard of the brand Royal Apothic before but now, I’m not going to lie to you, I’m going to purchase this product in every scent I desire because it’s crazy good. Since I gave birth and it became colder in the UK I have really suffered with my skin and plus who doesn’t like to have silky soft skin all year round? I’ve been putting baby oil on straight from the shower whilst my skin is still wet which has really helped me and I recommend you try it! Separately to that, this cream is beautiful. It is so rich and thick and exactly what you need this time of year wherever you are in the world. I use this on my face, hands and décolletage before I go to bed once every 2-3 nights when I’m not using my Caudaulie Oil. I really need to do an updated night time routine if I’m honest.

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 21.05.21MUA Eyeshadow Palette is pretty pretty good, a definite dupe for the NAKED 2 palette so if you don’t want to splash out on Urban Decay, GET THIS! It’s only £5 and honestly it’s creeped into my daily make-up bag, I even took it to Ireland with me INSTEAD of my Naked palette. The colours are all so similar and they honestly last all day, I use my Real Techniques Eyeshadow brush to apply them and use a crease brush for sliding colour through the crease. I may show you a make-up look using this palette soon because it’s great, truly, don’t waste anymore time, just get it. It’s the ‘Undressed’ palette which I think means that the similarities between this and the UD one isn’t completely accidental.

I don’t like to say it but, I haven’t used these Eylure Natural Volume Lashes yet but I feel I can review them as I have used these exact lashes previously, I’m not a huge lash wearer so I’ll be honest- they dug into my eye lid, they weren’t the most comfortable lashed I’ve ever worn but I know so many people that disagree so what I suggest you do if you would like to purchase these is click on the image for the product link and read the reviews on there, people seem to like them, like I said though, I’m not a lash wearer!

OVERALL RATING: 3/10

I feel like I’ve told porky pies in saying this month was everything I wanted as I’ve scored the products quite low but honestly, they were all the products I needed so it’s great that I got a chance to try these ones and found some hidden gems in there, I just received my December box so as always I shall use them for a month until January’s box arrives and then I’ll review, it was a rose gold box for December and I’m pretty much already in love with it. I’ve been driving for hours and flying all day today so I’m going to start off with the cloth face mask- there’s a little spoiler for you, then it’s a nice shower and clean bed sheets for this tired Mama.
